This unique and highly personal mixed media work on paper by Jean Tinguely and Niki de Saint Phalle, two leading figures of the postwar avant-garde, is executed in felt-tip pen, colored pencil, ballpoint pen, and collage with stickers, featuring visible dedications.
The work is signed lower right “Jean T.” and “et bonjour de Niki”, and dated lower left “le 28 Sept. 71”, confirming its authenticity.
This piece was specifically created for Victor Loeb and his wife Anne-Marie (Nani) and belongs to the informal, non-market works of Tinguely, in which his free and experimental working method is fully evident.
The combination of mechanical sketches, handwritten notes, playful figuration, and collage provides direct insight into the creative process and positions the work within an important collector’s context.
The work reflects Tinguely’s fascination with movement, mechanics, and structure, combined with the playful and expressive visual language of Niki de Saint Phalle. The free associations and layered composition offer an authentic glimpse into their shared creative universe.
The provenance is directly linked to the Anne-Marie und Victor Loeb-Stiftung, a Swiss foundation managing the art collection of Anne-Marie (Nani) and Victor Loeb. This collection is considered one of the most important private collections of modern art in Bern and is regularly exhibited in Swiss museums. Works from this foundation typically remain within an institutional context and rarely appear on the art market, enhancing their rarity and collector’s value.
Professionally framed, mounted on purple linen and float-mounted in a custom-made acid-free linen passe-partout, presented in a handcrafted wooden frame with Plexiglas® Optical HC (UV protection, scratch resistant, and minimal reflection), framed size approx. 80 × 70 cm.
Jean Tinguely (1925–1991) is regarded as one of the most important artists of the postwar avant-garde and a central figure in Nouveau Réalisme. He gained international recognition for his kinetic sculptures, in which movement, chance, and mechanics play a central role. His work is held in major museum collections such as the Centre Pompidou, Museum Tinguely, and the Museum of Modern Art.
Niki de Saint Phalle (1930–2002) was an internationally renowned artist associated with Nouveau Réalisme, best known for her iconic Nana sculptures. Her work is represented in major collections such as the Moderna Museet and the Centre Pompidou.
