This color linocut on light cream wove Arches paper by Pablo Picasso is an original design for "Exposition Vallauris 1964 “, a renowned ceramic exhibition in Vallauris, the southern French town where Picasso lived and worked for many years. The bold hand-drawn lettering “Exposition Vallauris 1964” dominates the composition and immediately anchors the work in its historical and cultural context. Executed in thick, flowing white lines against a deep brown ground, the typography reflects Picasso’s late graphic style, where writing, drawing, and image merge into a single expressive gesture.
The linocut is hand-signed in blue pencil by Pablo Picasso at the lower right and numbered in pencil at the lower left. It is fully documented in the standard references Georges Bloch, Picasso Catalogue de l’œuvre gravé et lithographié, Volume I, plate 1301, and Brigitte Baer, Picasso Peintre-Graveur, Volume V, Galerie Kornfeld, 1989, plate 1354. The work was printed and published by Hidalgo Arnéra in Vallauris.
Vallauris played a central role in Picasso’s artistic life from the late 1940s onward, when he immersed himself in ceramics at the Madoura pottery workshop. The town became a hub for experimentation, collaboration, and public exhibitions, and this linocut stands as both an artistic and historical document of that period.
