1975

This compelling color lithograph from 1975 is an early and historically significant work by Christo, offering rare insight into the conceptual foundations of his later monumental projects. The lithograph refers directly to Christo’s 1963 project Wrapped Venus at the Villa Borghese in Rome, where he wrapped a classical Venus sculpture. This radical gesture anticipated the artist’s lifelong exploration of wrapping as a means to alter perception, challenge tradition, and create new meaning through temporary transformation.

This work is hand-signed “Christo” in pencil and numbered. It is recorded in the authoritative catalogue raisonné by Schellmann and Benecke reference no. 74, confirming its importance within Christo’s graphic oeuvre.

The sheet measures approximately 65 × 50 cm.

Christo (1935–2020), together with his wife and long-term collaborator Jeanne-Claude, became internationally renowned for large-scale environmental and architectural projects such as Wrapped Reichstag, Surrounded Islands, and The Gates. Early works like Wrapped Venus are especially sought after, as they reveal the conceptual origins and artistic thinking that led to these iconic realizations and firmly establish Christo’s lasting influence on postwar and contemporary art.
