Pharmacy London is a monumental ten-volume artist’s book by Damien Hirst—one of the most influential and provocative figures in contemporary art.
This rare collector’s edition is hand-signed and numbered by the artist.
The set comprises ten vividly colored volumes, housed in a sleek, minimalist case that mirrors the clean lines and clinical branding often found in pharmaceutical packaging—an ongoing theme in Hirst´s work since his early Medicine Cabinets series (1988).
Beginning in 2005, Hirst undertook the ambitious task of photographing every dispensing pharmacy in Greater London. Over a span of more than a decade, he documented the 1,856 chemists across the city, capturing both exterior storefronts and interior scenes with individual pharmacists behind the counters.
Pharmacy London is the culmination of this project: a vast visual archive that serves as a portrait of London through its daily dispensers of modern medicine.
In his seminal 1992 installation Pharmacy, Hirst transformed an entire gallery into a functioning chemist, exploring the intersection of art, science, and belief systems.
Pharmacy London echoes this vision: it is both a time capsule of modern urban life and a commentary on the spiritual status of medicine in contemporary society. Through its repetitive, clinical beauty and methodical structure, the work becomes a meditation on trust, dependency, and the power of ritual.
