1996
Unique original drawing in ink, created in 1996 as the original design for the lithograph commissioned by XX Multiple Galerie to promote Glen Baxter’s exhibition in Rotterdam.
Signed and dated in pencil lower right by the artist.
This witty and surreal composition is quintessential Glen Baxter — blending deadpan absurdity with impeccable draughtsmanship. Two figures in old-fashioned attire lean toward each other, separated (or connected) by a dense black cloud of ink, a visual riddle that is both comical and enigmatic.
Framed, in a custom-made, acid-free passe-partout and presented in a gold wooden frame, with Plexiglas® Optical HC, providing UV protection, scratch resistance, and minimal reflection.
Framed size approx. 80 × 60 cm.
Glen Baxter (born 1944, Leeds, UK) is a celebrated British cartoonist and illustrator whose works have appeared in The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, and The Observer. Less widely known is that his first book, Atlas (1979), was published in the Netherlands — an unusual collaboration with a Dutch publisher operating from a cigar warehouse beneath a windmill near Volendam. Since then, Baxter has maintained a whimsical fascination with Dutch culture, frequently referencing tulips, herring, Mondrian, and Rietveld in his absurdist scenes.
His distinctive style fuses formal, Edwardian-style drawing with incongruous and surreal captions, creating a humorous tension between image and text. Admired by figures such as Wim de Bie (founder of the now-legendary Glen Baxter Museum), Baxter’s work continues to amuse, intrigue, and inspire collectors worldwide.
