This photographic work (C-print) from 2001 represents a strong and early example of Qiu Zhijie’s conceptual practice. The image shows a frontal nude self-portrait of the artist, with black, puzzle-like lines drawn directly onto the body and extending seamlessly into the white background. The figure appears both fragmented and interconnected, transforming the human body into a conceptual surface that addresses identity, culture, and systems of thought.

The work originates from an important early photographic series in which Qiu Zhijie examines the body as a site of inscription, memory, and social meaning. Through the combination of physical presence and abstract linear structures, the image reflects his broader investigation into language, mapping, and knowledge systems. The work is commonly referred to under the title Puzzle Man (2001).

The photograph is signed, titled, dated, and numbered in pen along the lower margin and originates from a very limited edition of 10. Sheet size approx. 100 × 80 cm.

Qiu Zhijie (born 1969, Fujian; lives and works in Beijing) is regarded as one of the most influential figures in contemporary Chinese art. His multidisciplinary practice spans photography, performance, ink drawing, calligraphy, cartography, and large-scale conceptual installations. His work has been exhibited internationally and is widely recognized for its intellectual depth and critical engagement with power, language, and cultural structures.
