This powerful color screen print by Jacob Lawrence was designed in 1970 in anticipation of the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich and reflects the artist’s unmistakable visual language. Executed on strong wove paper, the composition depicts relay runners in dynamic motion, captured through bold, flattened forms, rhythmic repetition, and a vibrant yet controlled color palette. Lawrence’s emphasis on movement, structure, and narrative clarity transforms a sporting subject into a compelling modernist image.

The work is signed and dated by the artist in pencil at the lower right and numbered in pencil at the lower left. The work bears the printer's dry stamp and verso the copyright  stamp © EDITION OLYMPIA 1972 GmbH 1970 Matthieu AG Zurich. Sheet size: approx. 109 × 70 cm.

It is important to note that this is a screen print and not to be confused with the widely distributed open poster edition produced for these Olympic Games.

Jacob Lawrence (1917–2000) was one of the most important American artists of the 20th century. Closely associated with the Harlem Renaissance and later modernist movements, he is best known for his narrative series depicting African American history, social struggle, and everyday life.
