1956
This original etching from 1956 is a refined and expressive example of Marino Marini’s graphic work from the postwar period, a time in which the artist increasingly explored the fragile relationship between humanity, power, and instability. Printed on high-quality Arches wove paper, the composition presents a loosely figurative image in which the horse-and-rider motif is reduced to essential lines and tonal contrasts.
The print is hand-signed in pencil “MARINO” in the lower right margin and numbered in pencil in the lower left.
It was published by XXe Siècle in Paris in collaboration with Léon Amiel, New York, and printed by the renowned Atelier Lacourière-Frélaut in Paris, one of the most important print workshops of the 20th century.
The work is documented in the catalogue raisonné as Guastalla A49.
Sheet size approx. 51 x 37 cm.
Marino Marini (Italian, 1901–1980) was one of the leading sculptors and graphic artists of the 20th century. Internationally celebrated for his horse-and-rider sculptures, Marini used this motif across sculpture, painting, and printmaking to express the tensions of the postwar era. His works are held in major museum collections worldwide, including the Tate, MoMA, and the Guggenheim, and his prints are highly regarded for their expressive economy and emotional depth.
