This expressive color lithograph from 1960 is a strong example of Marino Marini’s graphic work during his mature period. Executed on high-quality Vélin paper, the composition presents a powerful, almost primitive figures of a horse and his rider rendered in bold black gestures, surrounded by a rough, energetic field of marks. Sharp accents of orange and green punctuate the surface, creating tension and rhythm within the otherwise monochrome structure.
The lithograph is hand-signed and numbered in pencil below the image by Marino Marini. Sheet size is approx. 66 x 50 cm.
Marino Marini (1901 – 1980) was one of the most influential Italian artists of the twentieth century, internationally renowned for his powerful synthesis of figuration and modernist expression. Trained at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence, Marini developed a highly personal visual language that balanced classical tradition with the existential tension of the modern era. He is best known for his iconic themes of the horse and rider, nudes, and circus figures, which recur across sculpture, painting, and graphic work. In these motifs, Marini explored the fragile relationship between humanity and nature, stability and collapse, control and vulnerability.
