This rare and expressive unique color monotype from 1964 is a strong example of Mark Tobey’s mature artistic language. Executed with layered pigments and rich tonal transitions, the work reveals Tobey’s characteristic fusion of abstraction, spiritual reflection, and calligraphic gesture. The surface appears organic and atmospheric, with forms emerging and dissolving into the paper, creating a sense of inner vision rather than literal depiction. The composition reflects Tobey’s lifelong interest in Eastern philosophy, Zen Buddhism, and the idea of art as a meditative act.

The work is signed, dated, and dedicated in pencil at the lower right.  Authenticity is confirmed by the Committee Mark Tobey, Münster. The work is registered in the committee archive under number 27/04/22-64.35.

A monotype is made by painting directly onto a smooth surface and transferring the image onto paper, resulting in a one-of-a-kind work. Tobey favored this technique for its immediacy and expressive freedom, which perfectly aligned with his interest in gesture, intuition, and inner experience. Sheet size approx. 35 x 24 cm.

Mark Tobey (1890– 1976) was a key figure in 20th-century American art and is often associated with the development of Abstract Expressionism, although his work followed a more meditative and philosophical path. Influenced by Asian calligraphy, Zen Buddhism, and the Baháʼí Faith, Tobey developed his signature “white writing” style, in which dense networks of fine lines create rhythmic, contemplative surfaces. His work exerted a strong influence on both American and European post-war abstraction, and he was the first American painter to win the Grand Prize at the Venice Biennale in 1958.
