This original screen print by Raymond Hains, created in 1975 and printed on thin cardboard, is a strong and characteristic example of the artist’s conceptual approach to image, text, and urban visual culture. The composition reflects Hains’ long-standing fascination with typography, fragmentation, street imagery, and the poetic disruption of everyday visual language. Balancing abstraction and legibility, the work directly relates to his décollage practice and his engagement with torn posters, street signs, and layered urban surfaces. Sheet size approximately 100 × 70 cm.
The screen print is hand-signed, dated, and numbered in pencil in the lower right, confirming its authenticity and its position within Hains’ graphic oeuvre. The work demonstrates his ability to transform urban visual noise into a refined conceptual statement, a defining element of his mature practice.
This screen print was produced in connection with the exhibition “Friendship between Art and Words”, held at the Passage de Retz, Paris, in 2012, underscoring its historical and scholarly relevance within the context of Hains’ work and legacy.
Raymond Hains (1926–2005) is regarded as a key figure of the European post-war avant-garde and a founding member of Nouveau Réalisme, with a clear affinity to European Pop Art. His work draws on urban visual culture, advertising, and typography—elements associated with Pop Art—while distinguishing itself through a more conceptual, critical, and intellectual approach, in which language, context, and material decay play a central role.
