This rare lithograph (1976/1978) by Antoni Tàpies exemplifies the artist’s distinctive material-based visual language and his profound engagement with materiality, gesture, and symbolism. The composition is defined by two irregular, earth-toned forms that appear almost like fragments of walls or weathered surfaces. Across these dense brown fields, Tàpies inscribes signs, crosses, and gestures, creating a visual language that feels both primal and meditative, key themes in Tàpies’ post-war work.
The work belongs to a special edition of only 40 copies (Roman numbered). In an exceptionally large format, and issued outside the regular edition.
Sheet size: 61 × 87 cm.
The lithograph is signed in pencil by Antoni Tàpies in the lower right and numbered in pencil in the lower left. The work was printed by Erker-Presse, St. Gallen, and bears their embossed blind stamp in the lower left margin.
Catalogue raisonné reference: Galfetti, nos. 647–657.
Erker-Presse was highly influential in its time and has left a lasting mark on post-war printmaking and art history, particularly in the field of artist editions and fine art lithography.
Antoni Tàpies (Barcelona, 1923–2012) was one of the most influential European artists of the post-war period and a leading figure of Art Informel and material-based abstraction. His work is characterized by an intense focus on surface, matter, and signs, often incorporating sand, earth-like pigments, scratches, and symbolic markings. Tàpies viewed the artwork as a space for reflection on existence, spirituality, memory, and time. His art bridges painting, philosophy, and politics, combining raw physical presence with profound intellectual depth. His work is represented in major international museum collections worldwide.
