A.R. Penck (born Ralf Winkler, 1939 2017) was a German painter, sculptor, and printmaker, renowned for his bold, symbolic visual language. A leading figure in Neo-Expressionism, his work is characterized by stick-figure-like symbols, abstract forms, and primal imagery, reflecting themes of human communication, systems, and political resistance.
His powerful, graffiti-like paintings, influenced by primitivism, cave paintings, and modern urban culture, gained international recognition in the 1970s and 1980s. His works are now held in major museums and collections worldwide, making him one of the most influential contemporary German artists. His highly collectible paintings, sculptures, and prints continue to captivate collectors and art enthusiasts, solidifying his enduring legacy in modern art history.
