ca. 1970

In 1967, Andy Warhol created his now-iconic Marilyn series. The portfolio depicts the American celebrity Marilyn Monroe as the perfect symbol of Hollywood beauty, fame and glamour, presenting her in high-contrast bold colors. The series is based on a publicity still from the 1953 film Niagara, with the actress gazing directly at the viewer — a pose that has since become emblematic of Warhol’s exploration of fame, mortality, and media.

In 1970, the Belgian publishing house Sunday B. Morning proposed producing a new edition of the Marilyn portfolio. Warhol declined to participate, but Sunday B. Morning proceeded with the project independently. They issued a new series using different colorways from the original 1967 edition and added two black ink stamps to the reverse: “Published by Sunday B. Morning” and “Fill in your own signature.”

Exceptionally, for this edition only, Andy Warhol chose to sign a limited number of prints with the ironic inscription: "This is not by me. Andy Warhol." This gesture plays on notions of authenticity, authorship, and the commodification of art—central themes in Warhol’s oeuvre.
