The Valley is a 1989 portfolio by Keith Haring and writer William S. Burroughs, consisting of 31 sheets, including 16 etchings by Keith Haring. Haring hand-drew the designs for the etchings on copper plates in his New York studio. Burroughs contributed the handwritten text sheets, which were printed in red ink. The text, The Valley, is a chapter from Burroughs' 1987 novel The Western Lands. It tells an absurd yet relatable story about people living in a rift, unsure of their origins or destinations. This portfolio represents the final collaboration between Haring and Burroughs, as Keith Haring tragically passed away from AIDS in February 1990, only months after its creation.
