1966

Hand signed by Poliakoff, lower right.  Elegant exhibition poster, created for the 1966 retrospective of Serge Poliakoff at the Kunstmuseum St. Gallen in Switzerland. Sheet size : 67,5 x 74,5 cm.

The artwork featured on the poster is a quintessential example of Poliakoff’s style. His geometric abstraction combines irregular, interlocking shapes in muted yet dynamic tones of green, blue, black, and gray, creating a composition that feels both harmonious and mysterious. The subtle textures within the shapes reflect Poliakoff’s fascination with surface depth and his exploration of color as form. His work is marked by a rejection of figuration, focusing instead on the emotional resonance of abstract arrangements.

Serge Poliakoff (1900–1969) was a Russian-born French painter and a leading figure in Lyrical Abstraction, a European post-war art movement. He fled Russia during the Revolution and eventually settled in Paris, where he was influenced by modernist pioneers like Kandinsky, Sonia and Robert Delaunay, and Paul Klee. Poliakoff’s art is deeply rooted in spirituality and intuition, drawing inspiration from music—particularly his background as a guitarist—and religious iconography. His works emphasize balance, rhythm, and depth, and he believed that abstraction could convey profound universal truths.
