1964

Rare original color lithograph from 1964 titled Artmann – Brief Gulliver 2, created in collaboration between the Austrian writer H. C. Artmann and the German artist Thomas Bayrle.

The work is signed by both Thomas Bayrle and H. C. Artmann and numbered from the limited edition of only 25 copies.

PLEASE NOTE : It is the original first edition from 1964, and not the later re-edition of 1991 !!

The work was published by the renowned avant-garde publisher Gulliver-Presse.

This large-scale and visually dynamic composition combines typography, expressive drawing, and vibrant color passages in a collage-like structure. Fragments of text, energetic brushwork, and gestural marks interact with mechanical and figurative elements, creating a lively and experimental visual field. The imagery reflects Bayrle’s early exploration of repetition, movement, and urban dynamism—ideas that later became central to his artistic practice and his pioneering contribution to European Pop Art.

As originally issued by the publisher, the work was folded, allowing it to unfold into its impressive large format.

Size (folded): approx. 42 × 28 cm
Size (unfolded): approx. 172 × 122 cm

The work is accompanied by the original red linen portfolio embossed with the title:

“ARTMANN – Gulliver 2 1964”. Portfolio size: approx. 42 × 60 cm

Thomas Bayrle (born 1937) is one of the most important German artists of the post-war period and a pioneer of European Pop Art. His work explores mass culture, serial structures, and the visual language of modern industrial society. Bayrle’s artworks are held in major international collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the Städel Museum in Frankfurt.

H. C. Artmann (1921–2000) was a highly influential Austrian poet and founding member of the avant-garde literary movement known as the Vienna Group. His experimental use of language, typography, and literary collage made him one of the most innovative writers of post-war European literature.

This rare first edition from 1964 represents an exceptional collaboration between visual art and experimental literature and is considered an important early work within the oeuvre of Thomas Bayrle.
