Daniel Buren (b. 1938, Boulogne-Billancourt, France) is one of the most influential conceptual artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. He is internationally renowned for his distinctive use of vertical stripes, usually 8.7 cm wide, which have become a signature element of his practice. Rejecting traditional notions of painting and authorship, Buren uses these stripes as a “visual tool” to reveal and question the context in which the artwork exists—whether architectural, social, or institutional.
Buren represented France at the Venice Biennale in 1986, where he won the Golden Lion. His works are included in major international museum collections, including the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Tate Modern in London. His practice continues to influence generations of artists working across installation, conceptual art, and institutional critique.
