Bettina Rheims (b. 1952) is a renowned French photographer internationally acclaimed for her provocative, sensual, and deeply psychological images of women. Rheims began her career in the late 1970s, initially photographing striptease artists and acrobats. Her breakthrough came with the 1981 series “Portraits” and the 1989 series “Modern Lovers”, in which she explored gender ambiguity and androgyny—pioneering themes that have since become central in contemporary discourse.
Rheims has worked on commissions for top fashion houses and magazines, but her personal projects remain her most powerful and enduring. Her visual language is theatrical yet intimate, often casting women—whether celebrities, models, or everyday individuals—as empowered protagonists of their own narratives.
