1973
A rare and elegant color lithograph by David Hockney, enriched with a personal dedication.
The work is hand-signed and numbered in pencil at the lower right. Hockney has added a personal handwritten dedication in pencil: “For Robert / David Hockney.”
Robert De Smet, to whom the work is dedicated, was at the time director of the Europalia Great Britain cultural festival in 1973. This lithograph’s design was famously used as the official promotional poster for the event.
The composition reflects Hockney’s masterful balance of wit, elegance, and modernist sensibility. A freestanding antique mirror is adorned with a cascade of vibrantly patterned neckties, draped casually over its side. The absence of a reflected figure invites the viewer to imaginatively step into the scene—echoing the artist’s recurring themes of identity, perception, and presence.
Professionally framed to museum standards, in a custom-made, acid-free double passe-partout and presented in a deep, handcrafted white wooden frame, made in the Netherlands, with Plexiglas® Optical HC, for UV protection, scratch resistance, and minimal reflection.
Size framed : approx. 87 x 67 cm
