1977
This expressive silkscreen from 1977 exemplifies the powerful visual language for which Karel Appel is internationally renowned.
The composition features a bold, almost mask-like face constructed from sweeping black contours and vibrant fields of yellow, purple, green, and red. The energetic gestures and strong chromatic contrasts convey a sense of immediacy and raw emotion, hallmarks of Appel's artistic philosophy. The image oscillates between abstraction and figuration, inviting the viewer to perceive faces, eyes, and symbolic forms without fixing them into a single narrative.
The work is signed and dated in pencil at the lower right and numbered at the lower left.
The edition was published by Galerie Nova Spectra, The Hague, a gallery closely associated with avant-garde and modern graphic art in the Netherlands.
The work is professionally framed in our own frame-shop, in a custom-made white wooden frame with Plexiglas® Optical HC, offering UV protection, scratch resistance, and minimal reflection.
Size framed : approx. 92 x 76 cm.
Karel Appel (1921–2006) was one of the most influential Dutch artists of the 20th century and a founding member of the revolutionary CoBrA movement. Rejecting academic conventions, he championed instinct, experimentation, and childlike expression as fundamental artistic values.
Throughout his career, Appel worked across painting, sculpture, drawing, and printmaking, developing a distinctive visual language defined by bold color, dynamic gesture, and emotional intensity.
His work is represented in major museum collections worldwide, including the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and continues to play a central role in the history of post-war modern art.
